In regards to athletics, Dr. Sean Kishel is a former competitive soccer athlete that played throughout middle school, high school, and college. Sean was Captain of the East Aurora High School soccer team as a Senior in 2014.
Dr. Sean Kishel graduated from East Aurora High School in 2014 and attended The State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY at Buffalo) for both undergraduate and graduate school. As an undergraduate student, he studied Exercise Science and Nutrition while simultaneously serving as an undergraduate teaching assistant and an undergraduate research assistant as well. As a graduate student, Dr. Sean Kishel studied physical therapy and graduated as a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) in May 2021. Dr. Sean Kishel is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In addition, Dr. Sean Kishel is a certified Precision Nutrition Level 1 Nutrition Coach (PN1). Sean is also actively pursuing additional continuing education courses and certifications due to his passion to continue learning in order to better serve his clients.
Sean’s interest in becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach (PN1) emerged from benefiting from rehabilitation from a licensed physical therapist following several sports-related injuries as a competitive soccer athlete throughout middle school and high school. Dr. Sean Kishel utilized rehabilitation-based interventions provided by him from a licensed physical therapist and was also able to begin engaging in an assortment of general fitness programs. The thoroughness and comprehensiveness of combined rehabilitation and performance-related care allowed Dr. Sean Kishel to not only enhance his performance in athletic pursuits, but to also improve his body’s overall functional capacity for a wide variety of activities encountered throughout daily life.
Growing up, Sean didn’t exercise nor he did have any knowledge on nutrition or appreciation for proper food intake. Sean certainly did not have a healthy diet. He impulsively ate whatever he wanted whenever he wanted.
Throughout high school, Sean weighed approximately 150 pounds (at 5'11”) and did not exercise consistently (outside of organized sports). Although he was an athlete, he didn’t acknowledge the importance and assortment of benefits that proper exercise, nutrition, and rehabilitation-based interventions provided.
Sean’s profound passion and interest in exercise, nutrition, and rehabilitation arose in his early college years while living on campus after entering the local fitness center at college. Sean gradually became consistent in attending and engaging in various workouts throughout each week with minimal knowledge on reasoning and rationale behind his sessions; however, he kept showing up. As the months progressed, Sean dedicated increasing amounts of effort, time, attention, and focus into advancing his knowledge both inside and outside the college classroom in topics related to fitness, exercise, and nutrition. Eventually, Sean switched his major from Pharmacology & Toxicology to Exercise Science (with additional sought-after courses in nutrition). Eventually, Sean combined his interest in fitness, awareness of physical therapy services from past experiences, and his academic interests in human anatomy, physiology, exercise science, biomechanics, and more in order to pursue graduate-level studies as a Doctor of Physical Therapy student at The University at Buffalo.
As a graduate student, Sean developed a clinical skillset to not only provide quality, evidence-based rehabilitation services to a wide variety of patients and conditions, but to also blend this advanced skillset into carefully designing meticulous, patient-specific general exercise and sport-specific programming.
Sean is exceptionally passionate about collectively synthesizing and carefully implementing his knowledge and passion for exercise science, anatomy, physiology, strength and conditioning, rehabilitation, and other related topics as appropriate in order to best serve his community and beyond. Sean’s aim is to assist people in becoming better versions of themselves by helping them move better and feel better while educating them along the way.
In his free time, Dr. Sean Kishel enjoys actively seeking out and participating in a wide assortment of continuing education courses as a healthcare professional in order to continue refining his cognitive and hands-on skills along with actively engaging in powerlifting and bodybuilding, snowboarding, hiking, traveling, golf, soccer, and spending time with family and friends.
